A standout among Avatar: The Last Airbender's best installments gets an exclusive Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair.
Ordinarily, recap episodes face criticism from viewers as a needless diversion, or at best accepted as a requirement for series during the period of weekly production. However, this wasn't the situation, and Avatar: The Last Airbender showed it via "The Ember Island Players," a cherished segment during its concluding run that is now getting an exclusive Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop.
Information about the Secret Lair
The entire Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set was unveiled earlier this month. Containing five Secret Lairs, and even though a set named "My Cabbages!" is an admittedly humorous tribute to the series' beloved recurring figure, the other collections seem somewhat less imaginative, except for one standout: "The Ember Island Players."
Inspired by the seventeenth episode from season 3 of the animated show, this special set features the following cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image portrayed as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
What makes this episode stands out
Fans of the series clearly recall this installment, which served as a recap of Aang and his companions' quest leading up to the conclusion. Unlike other recap episodes, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" did not stem due to production constraints or scheduling problems. The producers specifically aimed to give fans a moment to reflect on the show's narrative, however, they opted to approach it inventively.
During the installment, the main characters view a stage show based on their adventures in a theater on Ember Island, titled The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is factually incorrect, over-the-top, and utterly comical. It excels as it plays with the heroes' understanding regarding their own identities, setting them against against how the world (and especially the Fire Nation citizens) sees them. It has an ideal level of self-awareness, and it results in possibly the best adaptation of the show released so far.

Regarding worth, this offers a fantastic Secret Lair for one simple reason: Braid of Fire. This card is valued between $20 and $40 on online marketplaces currently, while for $29.99 you can acquire the entire Secret Lair, or alternatively $39.99 for the foil version.
Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender edition is available for pre-release events beginning November 14 and launches globally on Nov. 21.
