There are numerous contenders for the designation as “world’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before automated cutting, building a modest trading ship required approximately ten lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical cutter, which turned timber into planks with virtually no manual labor, the Dutch were able to build ships faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch naval, economic and cultural supremacy across Europe and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's sawmill, argues the writer, was “humanity’s first true factory machine.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. One component transformed its circular movement to vertical motion for the saw.
