Colombia's Leader Declares 'I Would Resort to Weapons Again' if US Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have turned up the tone of their exchange, heightening tensions in their relations after US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has narcotics facilities and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Escalating Rhetoric and Claims

Addressing journalists on Sunday, the American leader threatened comparable armed intervention against Colombia, claiming the nation is also "very ill" and led by a problematic figure involved in producing cocaine and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the leading producer of cocaine, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way connected to the business.

A Deteriorating Partnership

The country has long been a close partner of the United States in the struggle against narcotics trade and benefited from bipartisan support in Washington, but relations have deteriorated markedly since Trump was elected.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by guerrilla factions including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters disbanded following a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Defiant Response

Upon being questioned whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good from my perspective."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am no an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he stated.

"Trump speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he expressed in a message.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will become numerous insurgents across the countryside. If they capture the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of Colombians loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the populace," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Statesman

Petro spent some years as a young man belonging of the leftist M-19 armed organization though it is believed to have ever engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he participated in creating a new constitution in 1991 and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of the capital city before winning president.

"I made a vow not to touch arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up weapons once more," he said.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Opposition

The Colombian defence minister stated that the president’s personal security was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump's stance, yet figures from all sides of the political spectrum have condemned the notion of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Pressure

American authorities revoked the president's entry visa following he encouraged US military personnel to ignore unlawful commands. Months later, authorities imposed asset freezes targeting Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.

At the same time while America bolstered its military presence in the region and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted strikes on boats in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
