RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
