Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Gunbattle at Nigerian School

Violent incident at educational facility
Schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group breached the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their dormitory, according to a statement.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The incident in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the violence.
