India's capital Awakens to Toxic Pollution Following Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Several parts of the city registered an air quality index above 500, which translates to 10x the safe limit established by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe levels.

Fireworks Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that blankets the metropolis as winter sets in.

Yet earlier this year, the newly elected local government approached the supreme court to seek a modification of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "tradition and environment".

Legal Verdict and Implementation

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the city showed air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst measurements seen during the festival in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the capital have continued as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the most severe records ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Contamination Factors

The situation in the city is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby states of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating dangerous haze that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air arrives.

Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million residents living in the capital region is significant, according to various investigations.

The contaminated air results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is projected to be causing approximately 10k premature fatalities annually in the city.
