Lando Norris Claims Debut Formula One World Title in Abu Dhabi In Spite Of Max Verstappen's Race Win.
With a performance full of nerveless racing, the McLaren driver has clinched his debut Formula One world championship by securing a podium finish at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished first and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.
Norris executed exactly what was necessary in an extremely intense race at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a number of audacious passing maneuvers, with flawless work from both the driver and his team.

With this his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the 11th British driver to do so. Being so fast in only his third season in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.
Verstappen was also exceptional to take the title battle to the wire. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a significant deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having enough to overhaul Norris, ending up just a handful of points short.
Sealing the Deal with Clinical Execution
He secured his success with clinical precision to win the championship that had been within reach but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the previous two rounds. First a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an questionable strategy call in Qatar.
This represents a significant achievement for the driver in his seventh season in F1, all of them with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during some difficult periods, convinced they would return to the top. That faith was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.
Norris performed a remarkable job to persist with his goal, maintaining his composure and belief even when under pressure. Having lost the championship lead to Piastri earlier, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from what he could.

Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, leading to a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris burst up the inside line, nearly completely off the track.
The incident was looked at by the stewards, with several nerve-wracking laps passing before a penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris was decided. This bold move without being held up was vital to his championship bid.
Diverging Fates
While Norris was crowned the first British driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was pronounced. As the young guns fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.
His first season with the Italian team had been greeted with enthusiasm but has yielded what was easily his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a top-three finish. He has appeared jaded in the closing races and will look to reset over the off-season.
