Forecasters have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," said the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are due to be low, so additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is anticipated to be disrupted.
• Travelers have been urged to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

Readings Set to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this signified the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is utterly paramount.
