US Military Executes Lethal Strike in Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths
According to a high-ranking defense official, the American armed forces executed a fatal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Background and Recent Strikes
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The government has encountered increasing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical objective. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current government.
